Former CA President Maggie J. Brown not only played a tremendous role in
Columbia’s unique history, but she also helped shape our community’s bright
future. She possesses a lifetime of remarkable and noteworthy achievements –
from overcoming racism and diversity in her hometown to becoming the first
female, African American leader at CA. Maggie’s hard work, unyielding commitment
and, above all, cheerful disposition is everlasting – and will be felt for
generations to come.

A leader is born
- Maggie Janine Earle was born on December 12, 1939 in Sun, West Virginia.
- Growing up, she spent much of her time reading and teaching herself about life
outside of her small, segregated town.
- In 1956, Maggie graduated from Stratton High School in Beckley, West Virginia.
Watch out world, here she comes!
- A dedicated student, Maggie graduated magna cum laude in 1960 from Bluefield
State College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and a minor in
math.
- After graduation, Maggie moved to Washington, D.C. to work as a Research Chemist
for the National Institute of Health in Bethesda.
Life, love and family
- Fun fact: Maggie and her husband, Nesbitt, met on a blind date!
They married on August 24, 1962.
- On July 20, 1970, Maggie and Nesbitt moved to Celestial Way in Harper’s Choice
in Columbia. Here, they raised three children: Kevin, Angela and Michael.
Maggie's Journey at CA
- In 1982, Maggie became sales manager of CA’s Membership Service Center.
- In 1988, she left CA to join the Howard County Government, where she worked for
the next five years.
But CA was always in Maggie's heart...
- She returned to the organization in 1993 as the division director of Community
Services.
- Because of her dedication, hard work and commitment to the Columbia community,
she received the honor of becoming CA’s first female, African American president
on July 14, 2001.
During her tenure...
- She began the strategic planning process, overseeing major renovations at CA’s
fitness facilities.
- She created a fifth division for Communications & Marketing.
- She helped CA retain a AA bond rating.
- She initiated CA’s “green movement,” by having CA set the standard for green
building and sustainability in Howard County.
- She implemented the Quality Program, designed to evaluate Division processes,
goals, objectives, strategies and metrics.
- Columbia was twice voted one of the best places to live in the country by Money
magazine.
Woman of Disctinction
- Maggie volunteered with the Howard County Public School System, Harper’s Choice
Village Association, Howard County Craftsmen and Columbia Birthday Celebration
Committee.
- She was named Volunteer of the Year in 1981 and 1982 by Columbia
magazine.
- The Columbia Birthday Celebration Committee named a scholarship in her honor.
- She has been active in Leadership Howard County, Community Health Strategies and
The Women’s Giving Circle of Howard County.
- Maggie has served on numerous committees, including the Howard County Chamber of
Commerce Board of Directors, Columbia Foundation Board of Trustees, Howard
County Democratic Central Committee, Howard County General Hospital Board of
Trustees and United Way Partnership Board.
- Maggie was named as one of the “25 Who Made a Difference” recipients by
Columbia magazine and as one of the “10 Outstanding Howard County Business
Women.”
- She is a member of the Howard County Women’s Hall of Fame and received an
honorary Doctor of Human Letters from Hood College for her great accomplishment,
commitment to values and service to the community.
- In 2008, Maggie was honored with the Exemplar Award from the Howard County
Chamber of Commerce for her extraordinary service and commitment to the business
community.
From wife and mother to executive and volunteer, Maggie has
been, and will always be, a tremendous figure in Columbia’s rich history.
Her legacy at CA will live on for many years to come.
